Unreal Moments in Capeside, #5

In episode #5, "Hurricane", there's a hurricane. One that symbolizes the turmoil in the characters' lives. How fitting! Basically what goes down is that Gail's affair is out in the open, Pacey makes a lot of adamant gay accusations of his brother (why was this so acceptable back then??), Dawson realizes Jen isn't such a slut after all, and he also mends things with Joey. Pretty standard fare, I'd say. So what was unreal about it? Dawson's choice dialogue:

Never heard that one before.. kind of hoping it's a one-time thing.

Unreal Moments in Capeside, #4

The below scene appears pretty boring, but let's put it into context. Previously, Dawson discovered he accidentally videotaped Tamara getting hot and heavy with some dark haired dude. Pacey's all, "I gotta see that!" and is found frantically rummaging around Dawson's room in search of it. Dawson enters and goes to get the tape for him.. and where else would he have placed it but in a hollowed out book. Get real! His room is full of tapes, how hard would it be to hide it among the rest?

Pacey soon admits he is the dude on the tape and has lost his virginity to Tamara. The whole time this discussion is happening, the door to Dawson's room IS OPEN. And his parents are home! He's so worried about someone finding the sex tape that he creates a terrible disguise for it in a book, yet doesn't shut the door for a private conversation??

Unreal Moments in Capeside, #3

There wasn't anything particularly unbelievable about this episode. Dawson tries to stage the perfect romantic first kiss with Jen. Jen takes a part in the high school movie "Helmets of Glory" to spend more time with Dawson. Joey lies about her life to some new dude that shows up in town. And Pacey continues to hook up with Tamara, a teacher at the high school. I suppose that would be the most unreal aspect, but I remember the stories about teachers and students at my own high school (and not even the good looking teachers!).

The back and forth between these two is incredibly boring. Pacey is pushy and then Tamara is all, "This is wrong, go find someone your own age", then immediately she gives in to him. She's uninteresting, flaky and easy. And Pacey is the only one in town with an East Coast accent. What's up with that?

Unreal Moments in Capeside, #2

Let's get straight to it. The most unreal moment in episode two is when Dawson asks his dad for advice on kissing. His dad's response: why don't you make out with that mannequin head and I'll watch and give pointers? Dude, don't go there!

Unreal Moments in Capeside, #1

When Dawson's Creek first aired in January 1998, I was a freshman in high school. I attempted watching an episode once but absolutely couldn't stand it, mostly because it reminded me of everyone I hated at school. Being 14 and a weirdo, I preferred anything on MTV like Beavis & Butthead, Daria, Sifl & Olly; my old stand-by The Simpsons; King of the Hill was still new at the time; and I would always stay up Saturday nights to watch SNL or at least program the good old VCR to record it if I had to get up early Sunday. So Dawson's Creek was seriously not my thing.

A mere fifteen years later, I was willing to give the show a second chance. It seems to strive to mirror regular high school life, but seriously some of the dialogue and situations are too unreal for me. And so begins...

Unreal Moments in Capeside, #1: The Pilot

Our very first glimpse into the world of Dawson's Creek involves title-character Dawson and his long time buddy Joey, who are both 15 years old, discussing why they should or shouldn't continue to have sleepovers on Saturday nights. I'm sorry, what? That's kinda whack. Why wouldn't they have thought of this earlier? Joey goes on about how it's wrong for them to share a bed now as friends because she "has breasts now" and Dawson "has genitalia", to which he responds he's always had it. And her retort? "There's more of it!" Ugh. Why I find this to be unreal: partly the fact that Dawson's parents allow these sleepovers, and mostly that Joey apparently didn't feel awkward about sharing a bed with Dawson until they were 15. Puh-lease!
